In Memoriam

In Loving Memory of Rick Megaro

The Esophageal Cancer Support Group of Philadelphia (ECSOP) extends our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rick Megaro, our beloved co-founder and friend.

Rick—along with the late Bruce Morrison—started ECSOP with a clear and compassionate mission: to walk alongside people facing the overwhelming challenges of esophageal cancer and other esophageal diseases like achalasia. Having personally battled these illnesses, Rick and Bruce understood what medical treatments alone couldn’t offer—hope, community, and support for patients and their loved ones.

Esophageal conditions are often silent until they’re advanced, and while doctors and nurses can provide expert treatment, Rick knew patients also needed guidance on how to live through the day-to-day realities of this disease. He believed deeply that no one should have to face this journey alone. And because of him, no one ever did.

Rick helped create a place where patients, families, and caregivers could come together—before, during, and long after treatment. He welcomed everyone with warmth and empathy, always reminding us that esophageal disease affects people of all backgrounds. He was especially proud that ECSOP grew to include more than 300 members, a testament to the need he helped fulfill.

When the pandemic interrupted our in-person meetings at Penn Medicine, Rick quickly transitioned us to Zoom so we could stay connected. In fact, this week was meant to be our first in-person meeting since COVID, and we had planned to surprise Rick with a plaque and the title of President Emeritus in honor of his years of service and leadership. That plaque will now be presented to his wife, Angela, with all the love and gratitude we carry in our hearts.

Rick also took great pride in the launch of our website, www.ecsop.org, where people from across the U.S. and even abroad have found comfort, resources, and a caring community—all because of the groundwork he laid.

There are no words that fully express the loss we feel. Rick’s wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength shaped this group into what it is today. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the powerful legacy he leaves behind. His work will continue, and so will his impact.

With love,
The Members of the Esophageal Cancer Support Group of Philadelphia
